Mark I had the same problem as you with th cdi box. Mine was an 88 Everyone says that only 87 and 88 will fit. Its not true If u can find a cdi unit for a 89-96 vt1100 they are almost identical it will plug straight up to your harness with no mods. You will have 1 extra wire by itself, this is for the kickstand and clutch safety switch. All u have to do is ground out this wire and crank up your bike.
