Push the outside button and the bell does not work. It has been in the house since it was build in 1988. Any suggestions?

Similiar issue, my doorbell kept sticking. So I replaced the sticky button but now my springs inside the bell housing seem to be sprung and unable to move the plunger the full range to ring or retract.
